Oh this just got real Meta. Apparently their ancestors also had a way to communicate with the planets. And I bet those people learned something that they regretted and all decided they should not have known. Thus they set up a place of Isolation and had people move there, then placed guards and maybe even The Storm around it so no one could enter or exit. They also made sure not to teach everything to the next generations. That way eventually the knowledge would be lost.
