I'm not entirely sure if this is a bug or working as intended, but:
If a manga's status is set to "re-reading", "plan to read" or "on hold", then it's possible to manually clear the read mark ("eye") on a chapter, but it's not possible to manually set the read mark. Instead, on mouse-over the title text "You need to follow this title to mark it read." is shown.
