Why did this manga get axed so soon?? At least show what would happen when the two girls finally go off to the Tales world. If I remember right, they have to leave the protagonist behind and never return.

Because with pretty much every adaptation, it only gives so much of the story which they hope will make you want to buy/read the original source. It's kind of like the way anime/movie adaptations of written sources don't always cover the full breadth of the story, it's nothing new.
