@FloatyBee Why not? I can understand it very well. Many old cultures have things they wouldn't want to live without, mine included. I'm not annoyed by that. I'm only annoyed by cheap nationalism (like the "glorious Nippon katana banzai").

If they have natural hot springs, then they know what onsen are (though they wouldn't call them that, of course). I guess - since it's translated to English from Japanese from whatever fantasy isekai language they speak - it should have been "thermal bath" or something.

You're fine with one expression of cultural loyalty, but not another? The onsen is no different than importance on the katana in this setup. It'd be the same for anything else associated with another country in that country's fiction.
It'd make even less sense for Japanese comics made by Japanese, sold to Japanese, with a Japanese main character, to praise things not of Japan over those homegrown expressions. In fact, the only ones I see doing that tend to be extremely chuunibyou, specifically absolute westaboos. The sort who adhere to American gunsmithing and German naming schema. And that's meant to be played as a foil to what's considered normal and acceptable in Japanese society.
What mystifies me is your opinion is not an uncommon one. People are fine with literally anything else Japanese-oriented being praised or uplifted in manga EXCEPT weapons. The moment a katana is featured as an important weapon people start complaining that it's not some sort of historical Western weapon that's never even crossed blades with a katana before, let alone been something a Japanese main character would not have grown up with legends surrounding. I remember another isekai demon king manga where the guy received a magical katana and suddenly people are complaining that it's not a poleaxe or some other specifically Western halberd. I don't quite get it.
Would they have been happier if it was the traditional 'longsword' (arming sword)? That's even more cliche than the katana, it's literally the blade of the fantasy genre. You will see it always and forever if you take any interest in fantasy - it's boring. But other, less common Western weapons, why would they appear?

Any place with volcanic activity has a decent chance of having hot springs and for its inhabitants to discover and use them.
It doesn't even need to have actual hot springs, Romans had thermae, y'know. The various greek people would have their own tricks depending on geography.

@Kayriel It's nothing that complicated for me. Warm baths have been and are everywhere. The ancient Romans had a highly developed bath culture, for example. Plus wanting to get clean comfortably is nothing strange in general. The katana issue bothers me when the MC just randomly comes upon a katana in a Western looking setting and it's depicted as a superior weapon. If it's not blatantly presented like that, it might not bother me so much. Like if it's just another weapon but kind of alleviates the MC's homesickness, then it should be fine. Another thing is food. I don't actually remember too many cases of Japanese food being presented as superior (since it's subjective anyway, unlike swords), so that's fine, but it's just sometimes annoying how the story goes on and on about how the MC acquires ingredients for Japanese dishes. It actually makes sense to miss the food you are used to, but it's hardly interesting to read about.
As much as I read manga and also watch some anime, I'm not a weeaboo at all, so things that are meant to cheaply please the Japanese audience's sense of nationalism or Western weeaboos look silly in my eyes.
Btw, I have a fully functional carbon steel katana on top of my bookshelf, sitting on a somewhat traditional looking stand I made myself, so it's not like I'd hate katanas, per se.

Manga and Light Novel are still a form of art/storytelling mostly for a japanese audience, so it's not very surprising they appeal to themselves with hurr durr superior katana pretty often.
Same for Onsen. Though bath culture is super widespread as well anyway, it's just the form of japanese inn that is copied in isekai story.
