I can see the endgame. Miko-chan needs to put her friend on a diet so that ghosts will stop cooking other ghosts on her aura.

Commensalism relationship right there. Big "smart" ghost just hangs around her, malicious lesser ghosts gets attracted to her "purity flame aura" like moths to a candle flame, lesser ghosts get burned and eaten by the big ghost. And eventually it grows too strong against her flame and do ****** and ****** things to her. The end.

The ghosts will look like they will try to attack you, but as long as you don't acknowledge them, nothing happens. The problem with Mieruko-chan is that the encounters get increasingly scary that it'd be difficult not to scream, which would then be a sign of acknowledging them.

However, the friend seems to have spiritual power, and is an inadvertent exorcist (the little men are burning up upon touching her). The big ghost behind her is likely an opportunistic ghost and "helped" with exorcising by eating other ghosts.

I actually heard somewhere that it is japanese belief that you should ignore spirits, because if they find out if you can see them, they will cling to you and make you miserable

I am not 100% sure about what I said, although you see a lot of cases in japanese ghost story where they will only attack you if they find out you see them and ignore you otherwise

She's like a big flashing welcome sign because of her spiritual power or something, which in turn attracts more ghosts to her, which is probably why her house and alarm clock were fucky. The big ghost was probably following her because it knows that, and was using that fact to get the ones getting close to eat them.

End up making the cursed place safe to work again.
