I've seen this mistreatment of animals scenario in manga/anime before. Is 'groups of children mistreating kittens' really common enough to have become a trope?

One of the most famous Japanese fairytales, Urashima Tarō, opens with the MC encountering a group of kids beating up a turtle, and that story supposedly has its origins from an 8th century legend, so this trope is much, much older than modern manga/anime.
