This series is so weird, I think there might be multiple monkeys trying to enact vengeance on the group. They his the body of the one that fell since it died on impact.

I bet the monkeys are doing this stuff out of wanting revenge for something done against them, that's usually how these things go.
I even think that the 'couple' did something bad against the apes, based on the statement that he's 'seen' them before. I think they're going on mountain climbs to kill solo climbers as a pair of psychopaths.
