It's not 100% cliche.
What i mean by this is that the so called cruelty of the Supard race did indeed happen, but if i remember correctly from the novel it was because Laplace gave them cursed spears (they have a tail that becomes their lifelong spear or some shit like that) which messed with their minds. For example the Supard that appears in this chap

was actually forced to kill his own family and because of the sense of guilt towards both his dead family and his whole race because he was the one to accept the cursed weapons from Laplace (while not knowing that they were cursed tho), he became a softie towards children and is trying to redeem the Supard race.
