I'm thinking magicians using guerrilla/unconventional warfare would be a big pain to counter. Especially after they learn the limitations of some modern tech and maybe get some modern tech to reuse for themselves.
Imagine a terrorist, spy or assassin with some modern tech AND magic. Even basic fire magic and healing magic can be useful on covert operations. Scarier is stuff like golem summoning magic. Small/tiny golems can be dangerous in many scenarios. Think that's just a doll? It's a golem that moves after most people are asleep... Payloads could include toxins or explosives. Or it just slits your throat when you're asleep.
In "Gate" mages could even do sleep or barrier magic.
@themanj the other issue is tungsten by itself is too brittle for a shield.
Tungsten and many tungsten alloys aren't that great compared to maraging steel:

By the way some jet engine blades are a single crystal: https://www.theengineer.co.uk/rolls-royce-single-crystal-turbine-blade/

People talking about what if the US were the ones placed instead.. think about Britain and the major orgasm they'll have now that they can colonize once again without having the French, Spanish and Portuguese oppose them... heck, the Queen may even return to her 20s at this point.
If I remember...the shield guy and the wyvern guy were one character, where the wife made sure he took a good luck charm with him...the metal charm and the wyvern took the bullets that would have killed him, and left him stranded pretty close to Gim.
@CountryMage
The shield guy is somewhat of a rank of a general, while the wyvern guy is a new guy in the wyvern cavalry.
Totally 2 different characters.
