TBF to the poor idiot, a gal being THAT direct would make me think she's just super comfortable about asking people for that kinda stuff and doesn't see me as special other than being manly and nearby. There's a level of upfrontness at which you just start to assume this must be how the person is with everyone they know, since we usually expect the people interested in us to either ask us out or get closer in a more 'normal' way. And especially for Japan, this would be so far outside the norm as to be downright baffling.

Heck, even in my own life I've only known two girls who'll just outright ask to do something like that, and in only one of the two cases were they actually interested in me romantically. The other is just a really affection-hungry person who loves hugs and cuddling with friends and family. It can be hard to tell the difference sometimes unless you're willing to put up with an awkward conversation and just ask outright.
