If you have been on novelupdates, you would know about their reading list function. Its like a library that you can add titles to and it will keep track of how far you have read and what more you have to read, and can be sorted to latest update.
How this differs from Mangadex, is unlike MD's news feed style, NU's only dose single title entry per list. (Having a list without duplicate entries is easier to keep track of)
In essence this sort of works like a virtual library of your favorites and makes it easier to keep track of what you still need to read.
This is also good it you want to know how many titles your are currently reading, keeping things organised and if you want to backlog some chapters you dont have skip back page upon page on your news feed of updates to find that titles that you had left simmering for months (this happens particularly if you follow a lot of titles)
Although i wont go as far as suggesting the ability to make custom reading lists (it would be nice, but not necessary) but for now, all i'd like to suggest is a better way in which updated chapters for titles are presented to make it simpler to keep tack of where you are. This is as apposed to the current "follows" section in use at the moment.
