This chapter kinda points out the main theme of the series in that to others their relationship is toxic and unhealthy, but somehow they make it work because it's perfect for them specifically because of their unique chemistry.



I think of it like the Adams family and how the mom and dad are in what would be a very bad relationship if it were anyone but those two in particular.

Shimada's reactions had me laughing so hard this chapter. I'd gotten so used to the heaviness that I forgot what it looks like from the outside. And playing it off as ordinary made this the funniest chapter yet.

@Tamerlane I agree with your first paragraph but I feel that Morticia and Gomez’s relationship is quite the healthy one. They treat each other as equals, they’re very loving and doting towards each other, they never put each other down, and they are madly in love with each other (they’re also always trying to get it on lol), and they work together to take care of the kids. The humour comes from their odd tastes in the macabre and being out of place in suburban America.

Contrast this to the sitcoms of the era where the parents in the family are always fighting, at each other throats, and the whole joke is how much they’re trying to one up the other. Those relationships are toxic.

Yeah, look at how The Simpsons presents main family's marriage - with Marge constantly nagging herself half to death, with several episodes where she either has a mental breakdown or literally sheds hair from the stress, Bart is an asshole attention seeker, Lisa is the ignored and mistreated kid who's not really "understood" by her parents or sibling, and Homer's a raging alcoholic with ego issues and lack of self-control or forethought. I get that it's supposed to be (at least it was early on) a parody of the sitcoms, but there's a reason such an image was created.

On the chapter - dude's got a point. It's not where you go, but with whom that's important.

@Abedeus That’s such a great point about the Simpsons being a parody of that sitcom mold. I didn’t put that together at all. The relationships where the husband and wife get joy out of putting each other down gets played for laughs In sitcoms, but it’s a pretty terrible one in reality.
