Question about licensed mangas

Hi,

A scanlation group just announced that the manga they’re translating has been licensed, so they decided to drop it. This has caused me to wondering why. In the announcement it just said release in North America and Canada. So it wasn’t licensed worldwide. Is it enough if a manga is licensed in a single country outside of Japan that groups drop them? I know groups don’t want be threatened with legal claims, so I understand why they dropped it. But it just irks me that this is done just because of a limited licensing of the manga in limited area.
Because I live in Europe, I’m often not able to buy the official translations since they aren’t available in my country.
So is it a general rule that as soon as something is licensed in the US it is generally dropped?

@RyuujiTakasu pretty much courtesy in the scanlation scene since people now can buy the official English version via vendors or 3rd party services. Better to support the author, you know. However, it's not an enforced rule or something and there are many series still being translated even though they have been licensed.
