The novel subverts all the harem tropes by making all the expected girls into dudes and even lampshades it later on when Will recounts his adventures. Random hot elf in the forest? Dude. Fallen royalty looking to take back their kingdom? Dude. Mercenary swordsman that joins the party? Dude. Even the classic guild secretary falls in love with hero trope is subverted since the girl is in love with another dude.
