For North Americans, there is Sibley Birds (US$19.99). It isn't an app that one can point at a bird for recognition; rather, it's a standard reference work transformed into an app and enhanced with recorded audio of bird calls.

I assume that similar apps exist for some other parts of the world.

yea.... birds are hard to ID sometimes...

As a biologist sometimes I need to be able to ID birds in the habitat.... most of the time i can't.

In the city, most sparrows you see here in California are House Sparrows.
Sometimes you will see white crown sparrows or golden crown sparrows.

Hummingbirds are fun to watch too.
