Such a big deal out of a plant in a pre-industrial society. It's kind of stressing the suspension of disbelief. If you consider RL, people were willfully introducing new species, plant and animal, to wherever they went well into the 20th century. Now they are a huge problem in many part of the world. But it was still happening when ordinary folks were already watching TV at home, not just in the 17th century, or whatever period it might be that this story matches the best.
