It isn't about motivation, it's just space is a very vague thing, destroying the space itself might destroy the reality of that world.. basically, it's like a blanket with that area distorted with pins and needles, and they need to retrieve the pins without destroying it, but if they destroying the blanket, all else will fall apart.
