@jinaikaa I think this is what we're supposed to understand, as well. Although his actions make me think he does care for Ash, but like one would care about a relative. I'm beginning to suspect that 'his lady' is Ash's deceased sister, and the mysterious pen and other mementos are keepsakes of her.
