Also note that both for this time and in Japan, it is not unusual for first cousins to marry one another, so this wouldn't be considered incest if they are, in fact, related. This assumes, however, that Sharon is one of his daughters, though it could just be that they were close as Rob suggests...

I'm gonna guess that the "parent and child" bit is more symbolic of the grandfather helping raise Sharon rather than Alice and the Duke being related.
I feel like that would've been a bigger deal if it was true.
But who knows? We're probably in this ship too deep to care if they pull a Luke and Leia.

@Tamerlane pretty sure they mean the Duke's grandfather treated her like a daughter. There isn't blood relationship, she was a friend and servant

I'm going to make a few suppositions and leaps of logic, let's see how close I get it in future chapters.
Japan has a tendency to look down on disabled folk even more than people accuse western countries of.
Rob, merely missing a single eye, is looked down on as a cripple and pariah, probably people assuming he's a delinquent and lost the eye through violence, and likely to get into more.
Appearance of a reprobate=can't get work=can't afford a roof over his head= ready to sit down and die in a ditch until the old Duke came along.

Also the way he wordlessly left the umbrella with Rob reminded me of every single time a character leaves their umbrella over a box with a kitten or puppy by the roadside on the way to school.
