I don't get why Eli is still the fiance of the prince, I get the empress wants to keep her close so she can use her later, but when she decides to discard her, unless she annuls the engagement beforehand, won't she affect the royal family/her son when she gets dragged down? the trial was the best time to annul it so I really want to know what's her plan for Eli

The Arabella. If Eli becomes the Arabella then the empress dowager will have vastly more influence in the church than she already has (as seen with her dealings with a high priestess(?)).
Manipulating the girl who gets the position is one thing, but Eli has been thoroughly brainwashed for 3 whole years, the control the Empress dowager has over ELi is on a whole other level.
