I mean, being realistic, the only reason any of us can condemn any of the characters for being ruthless to survive is because we've had it easy ourselves. You can say you'd have stood up against whatever, but if you've never actually experienced it you don't know what you might have done. Those decisive moments show people for who they really are, not who they think they are based on ideals.

Ling was right not to throw away Qinglan(little maid girl idk how to spell her name), by doing so she showed that she would never sacrifice anybody who loyally follows her, however the maid was also right to take matters into her own hands using the methods she knows best while considering her mistress’s desire to save the little girl. Everyone is right in this situation.
