I'm not surprised that this was a trap. Ling zhe still has a lot to learn
She's greedy for power with no true plan or growth, I said it before. Because she won a few fights she has become slightly arrogant, thinking she has nothing more to learn. Also having a soft heart, will obviously hinder her. She wants to play ruthless without being ruthless.
Also the Emperor has been surrounded by cruelty and intrigue so long, that he is paranoid and only sees the worst in people. He can't bring himself to trust anyone. Dude almost had a full on heart attack because he was feeling something so foreign to him.
Both are broken, and in their own ways toxic but they have one thing in common and that is their people.
Also the old woman gave her some sound advice. Even though I don't want to believe it about Baby Girl... It is what it is.
