While it would have been nice with him adopting her or becoming part of the family in a way, I think the fact their bond had this impact, and the fact that we can infer the Mom did improve is important. She still cared for him but she couldn't leave her mom either, and he didn't want to just kinda be there as a back up for the Mom. The Mom owned up and they are still connected. Good ending for all.
