I think they mean more that the assassin/thief turned out to have a "heart of gold" conveyed through them taking care of orphans. Cliche is more a matter of how much a particular group is exposed to something. For us, isekai is cliche but this scenario doesn't happen much in our circles, so I think it's not quiet right to call it cliche, more "classic".
