A professional killer doesn't assume the target is dead. And neither should the desperate clients. This is one of those things I dislike in story telling. Bad guy assumes he kills the target. Expositions the entire setup, who paid or he paid. And gives good guy a clear confession. Or confesses out loud to the air just to be heard by hidden hero. Who confesses aloud when you think your alone?
