Tonari no Youkai-san - Vol. 1 Ch. 2 - A Nekomata's Evolution

@justforthelulz Buchio. I see the ぶ and instinctively type "fu". I can see myself mistyping his name a few times in future chapters. It's gonna take a few chapters before I can type his name correctly without thinking about it.

OH SWEEETTTT!!! I wish my late grandma's cat turn into nekomata so he can live longer....
What's the requirements to turn into nekomata?? I want my cats to turn into one in the future! Isn't it cool to have a cat with 2 tails and can talk too!!

THIS IS SO GOOD? MAGICAL REALISM AND SLICE OF LIFE??? THANK U SO MUCH FOR SCANLATING!!

Seems pretty nice and relaxed so far. It's interesting how supernatural phenomena like this is treated like a normal facet of life. It would be pretty jarring for your pet to suddenly start acting human one day.

Awww, the family is so nice and understanding I'm glad they did not force unwanted attention on the nekomata.

I love how wholesome this manga sets out to be. I've always been a sucker for Japanse folklore and yokai.

@Ainzell
This is what I found after a quick google search:
According to Japanese folklore, a cat may become a bakeneko/nekomata by meeting any of the following three conditions:

- Living over 100 years of age
- Reaching one kan (3.75 kg or 8.25 lbs) in weight
- Growing its tail too long, which, according to myth, may fork into two.

@Simkin do you need to fullfil all of them? Or just one or two?

For the first condition, is it in human years or cat years? I mean if it's human years then I'll be long dead before I can see my cat transform.. if it's cat years then I just need to wait until they become 21 years(human years) that's 13 years more for my oldest cat.

Reaching 3.75kg in weight? Dang it! I NEED TO FATTEN MY CAT THEN.

I don't know if my cat's tail is long enough...how you consider them to be long? Like what's the bare minimum to be considered as long?

And I just got 4 kitten...I hope they can live for like twenty or more, and then transform into a nekomata! I want all of my cats to turn into one!! Like it will be super cool right to have lots of nekomata and then you can talk to them then buy them clothes(?) Etc

Aww this is cute, he was hiding because he was shy he said :3 it's nice how his family loves him.

Ainzell is scaring me lol.

@Ainzell Cats rarely live over 20 years so ancient Japanese believed that old cats aren't normal cats anymore but youkai. While this manga depicts Nekomata in a positive light, they are not always good. There are tales of cats transformed into Nekomata then kill and eat the owner or other people. After they killed the owner, they transform to and took the owner's place. This created a fear in Japanese in the old days and spawned the practice of cutting the cats' tail short in order to prevent them turning into Nekomata.

JP folklore was pretty much *anything* old enough went sentient and full yokai; the class of critters known as tsugumokami is exclusively assorted tools, household objects, clothes and what have you yokai'd this way. Umbrellas are probably the best-known example.

@miyako19 Oh..... that's quite....ummmm...gruesome....well I took care my cats like they're my family members....I think..they won't kill me..right?

Eh how about dog? Is there any folklore about dogs too? Maybe Inumata...or bakainu..?

When I read your comment...I was like that's a really catlike to do...hope my cats treat me right..

This was really cute. Nice to see that this is a happy occasion. Like others said this reminds me of Flying Witch which I also love so will give this a shot. Does anyone know why his name is embarrassing?
