You don't really need a .50 cal anti-material rifle for counter-sniping. .338, or even less, should be enough. But then again, in this story the guns carry themselves, so it doesn't really matter.

IRL, it wouldn't matter since the shooter is flesh and blood, but "shock and awe" with a AMR will definitely rattle them if you miss

in this world though you want it (AMR) to put down the other enemy ASAP or else they will return fire if they don't see you as a threat, and at that point you're screwed if you have the "smaller" gun
like a sherman going up against a tiger tank

@blammo A good point. Although realistically speaking .338 already would leave more than a scratch on a gun, as a regular AP round from it will penetrate 10mm of steel at 800 meters (according to a Lapua catalogue). There are probably more devastating rounds available as well. But of course a .50 hit will be much worse.
