@VINT64 In his point of view he loves the girl and wants the girl to know that he has man traits. His problem is that even though she's already his friend, she only thinks of him as this girly dude who's cute and likes cute things. Now he doesn't like that reasoning and wants to let the girl know that he's a man and not just some girly dude.

I don't quite understand the dude's way of thinking. He makes a plan, the plan goes more or less as expected, he self-destructs. What's the point of those plans in the first place?

To exaggerate somewhat, it's like this, using a more concrete example:

1) A nail is jutting out of a wall.
2) MC: "I wonder if I can hammer the nail back in using my fist."
3) MC strikes nail with his bare fist.
4) Fist starts to bleed and hurts like hell.
5) Yeah, how absolutely unexpected.
