From what I've heard from people who read the novel, ML's actually decent. His actions actually make sense. I guess he would've suited a good villian character but I don't think he's a good ML material for FL. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, how can they say they are neutral when they invited the prince/princess to the birthday of ther child? That's an obvious political move. First thing first. Different time period. It is only pretty damn recently that physical punishment wasn't regarded as part of raising a kid.

Secondly, gaining prestige and making a political statement ain't always the same. My guess is that they invited the Princess because it is expected to invite royalty to official parties, no matter your political leaning. In fact, not inviting them, even as just a gesture, could be looked as implication of lack of faith towards said royalty. And that would be a very poor political move.

He likely marked as neutral via inviting all sides and not taking favorites, not by excluding certain parties, because ye know, that would be a bloody political statement if I ever saw one.

@luminary, yeah the more fl treats him like some blood thirsty demon even though she's only met him twice, the more obvious it is that there was some deep political manipulations going on in the background, and the emperor had every reason to believe that the dad was committing treason. In those days it was commonsense to not let the direct descendants of a traitor live, so she got the chop too.

She calls the emperor a tyrant for killing the citizens, but the fact that the citizens of the dad's territory were more loyal to him than the crown just adds more fuel to the fire. It could be used as proof that he was raising a private army.
