I do get the point of not being able to smell burning as he has a mask on AND in a room with fresh paint is nauseatingly strong in itself. However, those headphones/music must be on max volume... If you can hear emergency vehicle sirens from across town there's no way you wont hear them come down the street directly next to you.

@JmTrad Exactly. It is a bad habit to just ignore the sirens, but I somehow understand. I live in a student dorms and the fire alarm broke at least once every month so the firefighters visit us often despite no major fire is happening. You know, students often blow up something in the microwave, left the stove or oven unattended when cooking, smoking in their rooms, cooking something that produces a lot of smoke but forgot to turn on the exhaust, etc. But because it is happening so often, we kinda don't feel the emergency anymore when the fire alarms go off. We don't know if it is a real fire or a false alarm. So when the alarm goes off many people just stay in their rooms.
