This "lifespan" concept seems to be a very popular myth. I doubt they realize the concept's implications though. It makes the universe deterministic, among other things.

@Koremitsu_Arita The way lifespan is used, in most stories, seems like a prediction rather than guess. "Life force" is perhaps what you're thinking of. Although that's a myth too, it doesn't require determinism.
