“his” not “hi's”
“hers” not “her's”
“theirs” not “their's”[/ul] The apostrophe in the other genitives originally was like any other apostrophe, indicating the omission of an unsounded letter. Many genitives used to be spelled differently, then the vowels in their final syllables fell silent and were replaced with apostrophes, and then the apostrophes spread to other genitives, but not to the pronouns.
