@QVladDracul2 That's the thing. He's strong, whereas she is not. As he is now, he doesn't necessarily need the help of spirits like she does. Perhaps the spirits took note of that and decided to lend her a helping hand. Could also simply be that the Water Spirit took an interest in something inside her and decided that she was worth protecting. Personality likely has a lot to do with whether or not a spirit is willing to become someone's patron.

He probably tried this out when he was just a kid trying to survive on his own, though. Which is to say the spirits would have taken a look at him even as a struggling child and still said "Fuck this guy, he's on his own." I'd figure their interest in Lily is due to something else than her current weakness. I'd put money on the quality or quantity of her magic power over anything like them being so altruistic towards her in particular. They want something from her that others don't have.
