Iirc the vol 2 ends with Karen asking Yariba for her reward, calling her Karen when they're alone together, for making it past the selection and there was an implication that the old man specifically sent Doumeki for Yariba to take down and push him back up the corporate ladder so he could be of more use to him in the office politics. Not sure why they didn't keep that reward intact here.

Vol 3 is a breather to set up his new rival, Saki's and Yariba's childhood friend who's going to lead a downsizing effort that almost certainly will eliminate the Hachiouji call center and turned into a real cold hardass because of his dad's shamefur reputation following him into his career. Said dude has a thing for Saki and thought Yariba really wasted away his chance with her and keeps egging Yariba to be the awesome dreamer he remembers him being. The other JK is Karen's best friend from another school and Karen herself introduced them to each other because she really wanted to have someone to talk to about her much older boyfriend. She's not so keen on him since it looks really bad for Karen if they get caught and she's also the daughter of the Witch that Yariba asked that big favor from.
