I guess she really is using teaching literacy as her way to befriend the kids. I have to say I still don't really get why the author choose this as the way still. I wonder if the WN gave some explanation because I just don't see kids being taught to reach as something as a friendship opening value - at the how the manga framed it... or its lack of framing.

Teaching the kids is probably more a way of coping with loneliness than trying to make friends. People need to socialize. To underline this point, solitary confinement can cause extreme, irreparable damage to the human mind. This isn't nearly as bad, but I imagine it served a key role in her ability to cope.

Generally in medieval settings like these, literacy rates are really low because commoners can't afford sending their kids to school and are illiterate themselves as well. Being able to read is pretty much a surefire way to get ahead in life, plus kids would probably really like showing off to their commoner friends how they can read just like those rich nobles.
It's almost like some animal mascot came up to an 8 year old child and said "hey kid, wanna get SUPERPOWERS?"
They're not gonna say no, they're gonna become Mahou Shoujo Reading-chan or Kamen Reader or some shit.

@GoblinGuy That makes sense, it just that it's still feels off. Medieval settings automatically implies multiple elements - one don't need to panels of exposition to explain the concept of a monarchy for example. Low literacy of the populace in a medieval setting is a fairly common knowledge trope too (though not as much as other elements). But I still feel it needed a better transition. Hell, even a single panel, saying "hey kid, wanna to be able to do something like those nobles" might be enough for me. If someone chimed in to me that in so-and-so story, the medieval setting have low literacy, but since books are so expensive and there's few jobs that requires it most people just don't value it, I would find it plausible too (actually Honzuki no Gekokujou might be playing it this way, but it's not explicit so it might not).
