What you say makes perfect sense - in Japanese. You can just say "suki" and given sufficient context, everyone will understand. But in English, it does not work that way, as this language is much more explicit, and thus less reliant on context. "Love", by itself, does not convey the same meaning "suki" does. I totally respect your desire to stay true to the author's intentions and the speaker's personality, but if the translation comes off as awkward because of it, then you threw out the baby with the bathwater. Just my opinion, of course.
For the record, this translation of chapter 84 feels greatly superior to Dropout's pretty much everywhere, except here. But since this is such a pivotal moment... well, I'd say it's a shame.

It's really a shame, all it would needed is an "I" in before and three dots after for a minimalistic feeling. :-)

Then again, nothing shorter than what contains a 3 worded "i love you" would have felt like Miku is pussying out... yet again. It's good to know she said it in the original in a degenerate/childish way, at least.

Yknow, i really like the mc in this story. Honestly probably one of the best main characters i've seen in some time. He doesnt have steam coming out of his head after looking directly at a girl for more than 0.5 seconds, he isnt insufferably stupid or dense as a rock, he doesnt get into some wacky gag every other scene, and he's not one of those happy go lucky shounen mcs with a stupid grin on their face for 3/4 of the pages. Frankly, he seems like an actual human being. Refreshing, tbh.
