@Sakai Can i ask why ? I can understand cotton swabs (even i found that strange) but a earpick is quite a strange to bring to school unless you stay at dormitory.
 
I don't know why this practice seems to remain popular in Japan. Use of a syringe is considerably safer. (Just make sure to dry-out the ear afterwards.)

Syringe is probably safer. But probably why the practice is still popular could be culturally motivated. As there are different types of ear wax.

Another possibly is a remembrance when a family member or loved one took care of them.
 
Having your ears picked actually feels great. Just tell them to be real gentle though since they might accidentally push some dirt deeper in your ears or injure your ear canals
 
wait theres a method and proper tools for earpicking?

i always just stuck one of these in my ear and try to get the wax out
