I completely agree with the old demon. For MC to limit himself to only defense taking away his initiative to be able to do anything is the height of stupidity. As a result the author backed himself into a corner where he has to come up with all sorts of excuses to justify the MC using his defensive ability offensively and none of it makes sense.

The only reason he's restricted to defense is that he needed to get much stronger very fast (like, in only a few days) to beat Liu Li, who had a higher cultivation than his. Without that, it might have been possible to adapt the Formless Method to have offensive abilities. Though if he'd done that, his defense would be lower than it is now (there are always trade-offs) and he wouldn't have survived some of the blows he's shrugged off.

I agree with the Demon as MC uses v.little of his true potential,
but is it really MC's fault that there are no void cultivation techniques passed out from antiquity (and void is rare as hell).
Yes, he did limit himself by swearing "I won't attack others", but he didn't really have that many options to choose from.
