He needed to leave an heir before he ascended into a Demon Lord, which somehow hastened his first marriage.
The second one was political, seeing as he couldn't reproduce anymore.

14. 6 of them haven't appeared in the manga or spinoff yet iirc. Mind you there's demon lord and "true demon lord". Rimuru and the twelve are considered true demon lords, unlike self-proclaimed ones like Clayman, Karion and Frey. Assuming we consider Ramiris as a permanent resident of Tempest, makes her the 14th.
