I understand they're pretty great but I have always been kinda turned off when I can't open them.

they opened in photoshop and didn't have a thumbnail,
I don't know how I missed the official google codex before, maybe because it doesn't use the normal google design language

with it windows photo viewer or even paint can open webp and has thumbnail support.
