@Assaultsquirt The real world is the exact opposite, it favours those with talents way more than hard work, and you gave the example of Bill Gates, but what you don't get is that people with talent also work hard, anyone who is "smart but lazy" get nowhere after school ends. People who drop out of college and become billionaires are exceedingly rare.
 
@Darklight99 Bill Gates, iirc, also dropped out of Harvard as opposed to just some college, and got his way because he bought up different products that he thought had potential. In other words, he already had money, and his "talent" was business sense. He is not a good example for how much the school system sucks, and it does.

Anyway, it still kind of makes sense that Saitama is not ranked properly, outside of it being a parody, because all of his major accomplishments either got ignored, or given to other people. He has power, but the only people who have seen it applied in a practical sense are in his group or running a food stand.
 
@Darklight99 99% of rich CEO's are borderline psychopaths and got where they are now because they are smart and used the average worker who got them there in the first place
 
@flashmozzg Thats not what talent means. There are a lot of "lazy geniuses" out there. Well dozens anyway.

You do not need to work hard or make use of your natural abilities to be considered a genius. These terms refer to natural abilities, not ones honed through effort. A talented person is someone who through the same effort and circumstance will excel beyond those without talent.

A homeless person content to hand around at soup kitchens or a person living a simple life accomplishing nothing can be talented. Talent often comes with a desire to do things associated with said talent but in no way is it required that you work hard to be a talented or a genius. Thats why people say you can "waste talent" and such foolish notions. A genius is not a genius because they learn't a lot of things or practiced a lot.

Go look up the definitions of words before you say such things. I always do and it helps me not make an ass of myself quite often. Its surprising how many words are commonly used wrong lol. This is not saying your making an ass of yourself btw, just pointing out that i would have in the past without a dictionary on hand.
 
@hillerj Sweet Mask doesn't hold the kind of sway you might be thinking of. What has been happening is that he has been beating up people he doesn't think deserve the S rank. The reason the HA is forced to accommodate his views is because HE BEATS UP OTHER HEROES, not because he has any particular political leverage on them. The HA obviously doesn't want fratricide, so they have to tighten the S-class selection system and use Sweet Mask as a sort of special examiner.

When you think about it, Sweet Mask is right. If you can't beat him you shouldn't count as S-class. He just presents a test above and beyond what the system offers as standard. Think of him as that professional interviewer in HR who makes the decision on special talent. It's just that he conducts his "interview" with superpowers.

Also, there's no indication that Sweet Mask puts in any special effort to be a hero. Certainly nowhere near Mumen Rider. He sits at the top of the A class simply because he was ALREADY promoted to S-class but rejected the promotion, so he just can't be positioned lower than where he is. Under the normal ranking system he would have been a B or C, just like the other S-class. Sweet Mask's main public job is to be the poster child of the HA.
 
@Darklight99 Success really is relative. Becoming a billionaire does not even equate success. People just associate money with success because they value money.

"gets nowhere" depends entirely on your definition of "nowhere" and where they "should" have gone. I mean life is not a contest. You don't even need to do anything special in your life to live it happily. If a person lives in solitude gardening and dies alone does that mean they went nowhere? Does it matter what they did?

"Hard work" is often misunderstood by people anyway. Generally if they don't see the work in a way they understand they deem the person "lazy" or having accomplished nothing. Thats usually where overnight success comes from. A lot of groundwork led to a sudden outcome people could understand.

What I'm questioning is, they had ways of finding the people who were beyond insanely powerful amongst the lower-ranks and then scooping them up into S rank.

Bat took down a Demon-rank all on his own at Rank C. They noticed him, people likely appreciated him. They even mention that these guys turn up when the first-responders get floored, and effortlessly win.


Saitama does this, everyone jeers at him and the other heroes. Remember Sea King? Saitama saves everything and everyone in front of people and he doesn't get evaluated any higher, public turns against him.
Why is it different now compared to then? Back then, Demon-rank was new, that's only one rank above Tiger. Then Dragon shows up, too. They had a system in place for handling those stand-out heroes who AREN'T popular, but are strong.

sea king arc - i remember genos was at the scene too, it maybe one of the reason. Also it rain heavily in that day, people stay inside after saitama punch that rain being clear away, then wa have a clear side view of the scene
and i think the monster saitama defeat can be devide into 2 type
not report: the monster he defeat by just wandering around in his neirborhood or rural area so no credit
report: the credit has been given to king

one of the main running gags in this series is that saitama looks very plain, and doesn't stand out at all. king stand out so much that king was given credit for most of saitama's major accomplishments.
association knows saitama is very physically strong but haven't noticed his true combat ability.
 
@Kayriel He took down Sea King effortlessly, and to save the reputation of the other heroes that just got taken down, he gave credit to them for softening Sea King up. The readers know he was lying through his teeth to preserve the other heroes' reputations, but the civilians only saw one guy take down the enemy effortlessly. That kind of thing normally makes the enemy seem weak; it only works for the readers because that is the joke of the series.
 
@Kayriel The association knows he is OP, but they won't give him an S rank cause, I dunno, cause they can't kill the main gag of the series, i guess.
The story does try to have reasons. He's C rank cause he failed his essay test. Saitama built up a bad reputation after joining the association, and a hipster in the right time and place, so skepticism. etc.

I guess what it's trying to establish is that because he is previously unknown (unlike genos who was already being head hunted). And someone OP out of nowhere, but with unknown motives, is too questionable to just give public recognition on the spot. Then the bad rep and skepticism built up. Even if it's the case, it's still being dragged on though, cause again, gag reasons.
 
Metal Bat has got to be one of my favourite heroes. The fact that he's just a really angry dude with an indestructible bat is icing on the cake.
 
@Redice Except the association actually doesn't know that Saitama is strong. He's never done anything that was picked up the association to show that he's pretty much a god. Sea king? He gave the credit to the other heroes. Boros? They didn't even know he existed. Artificially created angery man? Ditto. Martial arts monster? Ded in an instant.
In the end, Saitama deals with his opponents so swiftly that the association doesn't even have time to notice him.
 
@Top_Nep Did you forget the scenes where they commented on his physical attributes on the test or how the video record of his punch to the sea king can't even be captured frame by frame? They, or at least a circle in the association knows. It's just met with extreme skepticism with how over the top, comically unbelievable his strength is. This dragged on to, spoilers on the webcomic,
even after various S class heroes saw his power first hand, including sweet mask getting outright obsessed with him, and Metal Knight started investigating him. The association only increased his rank to A.
