crazy theory:
once momonosuke is on onigashima, kanjuro's role is over. he could perfectly play the role of kozuki oden and help momonosuke be the next heir to the throne. he himself said that he has no loyalty to either party and solely moves to play a role

Whew. That flashback was way too long. A lot of it was important to the plot and backstory, sure, but there was way too much going on. I feel like this needed to be broken up and doled out in tidbits over time.
