Usual trope would be that she has great potential, but it would've ended badly for her so he was 'doing her a kindness' in his own twisted way.

(He's able to foresee the future, yet I imagine that most of what he sees will be misery, and people not listening to his warnings or heeding advice so now when he does help he go's at it by being an utter asshole, which has become his usual attitude, since you can only act or behave a certain way for so long till it sticks and becomes a part of you)
