The brain is already hardwired to detect faces (otherwise prosopagnosia wouldn't be a thing), but the nerve clusters are over-condensed rather than being spread out. That means that the sensory intake, which is already fairly intense, gets power-boosted by the part of the brain that recognizes faces.

In other words, looking at a face is like being yelled at.

The scientific terms are "fusiform gyrus" and "purkinje cells", if anyone was wondering.
