Likely the prince sent the thugs to try to make his claim real, or the heroine lied to the prince to make him believe it (though sending the thugs puts that to irrelevant, since either the prince is scum, or both are).

I guess Japan might have that too in some parts, as their purity culture is kinda weird in the head, plus it was pertain to the heir problem. Pre-Meiji Japan even had unwritten rules about cheating which was basically you (male and female) could cheat on your partners as long as you already had heirs... and before marriage, you weren't allowed to lose your virginity or something like that.
