Hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs and fall under the suborder Feliformia and the family Hyeninae, while tanukis fall under the family Canidae, like wolves and foxes, under the suborder Caniformia, tanukis are actually closer related to foxes than domestic dogs. Both dogs (and bears) and cats all fall under the same order Carnivora. Actually true raccoons are Caniformia but not Canidae, just like pinipeds (seals and walruses).
