Honestly in some ways that's like the most sensible-adult reaction possible.
(I mean this doesn't appear to be the reasoning behind it, based on the next chapter—but most of us can't have a sincere relationship with someone we don't even know. Best to be frank and up-front about it. Then take it from there. Preclude having ongoing stress and angst over the matter, and so forth.)
