that trick is kinda 5head tbh. obviously, books should be respected, but i don't think it's necessarily disrespectful to break in your book this way. especially personally-owned workbooks that you already write in, it's just another way of using them.

I've never understood dictionaries being such a big deal in Japanese schools. Japan's well known as being more inclined to smart phones than most other places, why not just get dictionary apps? They work just fine for me...
