Bear in mind that the internal chronology has been much slower than has been the passage of time for the readers. He's had the package for just more than a year. At the immediately following Christmas, he may not have known where to deliver it, or he may have thought that, by virtue of whatever the gift were, it would be too heartbreaking to receive it so soon.
