They're really leaning into the whole 'everyone hates this dude because he has a friendly relationship with an attractive girl trope' like, the guy's looks are at least average, has seemingly successful parents, and knows what he's going to be doing with his life already. There's nothing hateful about him, especially since personality wise, the person that he's friends with seems to be the type that is friends with everyone.
